Scheme helps teenagers to stub out

TEENAGERS have been helped to quit smoking through a pioneering Copeland Council scheme.
TEENAGERS have been helped to quit smoking through a pioneering Copeland Council scheme. The self-help group at Whitehaven School ran for seven weeks and was led by the council’s smoking compliance officer, Dianne Richardson. She said: “They all did brilliantly. Fighting nicotine addiction is difficult enough for adults and it made me very proud to see the dedication of these students.” The pupils met during their lunch hour and discussed why they d, why they wanted to stop, and strategies for successful quitting. They were also able to have their carbon monoxide levels tested. Five pupils completed the course and Dianne will run another in September because so many pupils want to take part. “As the students found out, starting to is a lot easier than stopping and hopefully the sessions helped them through this difficult process,” she said. “We will continue to support them in September as well as working with a completely new group of pupils.” Coun Hugh Branney, portfolio holder for young people, added: “Smoking blights lives and this course is really getting to the root of the problem. Every child who quits now will have a much better life ahead of them. All the pupils who committed themselves to this course have shown great character and should be commended.” Each person who completed the course received a gift voucher as a reward.
